I received a letter in the mail today about having consideration for my neighbors. It went on to say my dog barks all day while I'm not home and often while I am home. I just wanted to say that I am home all day, except for approx. an hour, everyday. My dog is not the barker. He barks only when UPS, meter reader or strangers come near. Recently we had new neighbors move in that have an outdoor cat, so he did bark at that and we put him inside. Then they had an 11PM party which we also put him inside. You may send your letter a couple doors down, because they do have a little dog that barks all afternoon or better yet, you should actually go and be neighborly and discuss your concerns in person.

Same thing happened to me in my old neighborhood. Neighbor blamed my dogs for doing all the barking. She repeatedly knocked on my door telling me that my dogs (one beagle, one lab mix) were barking constantly. I asked her for specific times...she could not give them to me. I asked her to come over next time exactly when she is hearing my dogs...she would not.
We eventually moved away. Some months later, I found out that my old neighbor called the city on every single household on the street that had a dog...guess it wasn't my dogs after all.
My suggestion for you is to keep a little peice of paper on you counter for 1 week. Jot down the times your dogs are out. Then if your neighor complains, just pull out your list and double check and see if your dogs were out.

As I have posted before - our crazy nuthole lady neighbor sent us a letter threatening to kill our cats because they were apparently coming over and terrorizing her cats and eating several bowls of food per day (and somehow also eating the one bowl of food and small portion of wet food that we leave for them everyday). Needless to say 1) the lady is a nutcase 2) turns out she either mailed or hand delivered a note to just about everyone griping about cats, dogs, lawns, and the Lord Jesus (she must not be Christian??) 3) we called the police to have the situation documented (Brillian LPD then told us to go talk to her - yah, talk to a demented nutjob who will kill cats without any proof)
I, like you, wish she would have just talked to us. Our reaction was to go to all of our neighbors and make sure our cats were not causing harm (she wouldnt answer the door) - and in the process found that our cats only have ended up in two other yards and both neighbors said that they neither eat nor poop in those places.
So consider the source a nutcase.

Thank you for all of the advice. I was shocked when I received the letter. We have a mini pincher and he is the sweetest little dog. I work from home and am home all day, except for about an hour or so to do errands. I've lived here for almost 4 years and have never had any problems. We've found it is such a friendly neighborhood and that is why I was surprised that someone wouldn't just tap on our door and let us know they felt our dog may be barking. He seriously barks only when we get deliveries, which I'm not going to teach him not to do that, he's our little protector and the barking last as long as the delivery (we don't get many deliveries). Other than that, he is just getting used to our new neighbors, their cats and new puppy and their friends that come to see their new home. We put him inside if he doesn't calm down.
A couple doors down, on the street that backs to us, there is a little dog that barks, but like I said I'm home all day and I believe their little dog just is letting his/her owner know "let me back in". Their dogs barking isn't even extreme.
I was hoping whomever sent the letter would read this and realize maybe they should be more neighborly and knock on the door or at least do more research before accusing all dog owners and threatening to call authorities. Their letter begins "Please have more consideration for your neighbors", well I wish the letter writer had a little more consideration.
I think I will call animal control myself just to let them know of our situation and have it documented.
Thank you.

Hi Kiddos! I had posted the same complaint about a month ago about getting a letter from my so called "surrounding neighbor". I have 2 dogs, too, and they only bark when we are not at home taking our daughter to school and the pool guy comes in on Tuesdays at 9am or there's someone near our front yard. The dogs only bark to protect and warn - that's why we have them! We work from home, so we can say we are home 85% of the time. I have asked all the "surrounding neighbors" if they have had a problem with my dogs and they said they didn't - even the one that is next door with the dog run that faces them!!
Anyways, I did my neighborly best to talk to all my neighbors and still haven't found the person who left the letter. Just wondering where abouts you live, it might be the same person?? I agree...this person should just have the guts to just knock on the door and find a nice solution to the problem.

It's a sad state of affairs that people just can't be neighborly anymore and air their concerns in an adult fashion.
Every neigborhood in town has people like that. I've heard every imaginable tale possible from folks we know in various areas around town.
